Minimalist Tendencies: The Calvin Klein Influence & More in the Style File

Calvin Klein Minimalist Tendencies

Where would we be without Calvin Klein? With his clean lines and crisp, modern sensibility, Klein provided a compelling, palette-cleansing alternative to the heavily detailed styles that had previously dominated upscale womenswear, effectively changing the course of fashion.

While the mid-nineties is considered by many to be the heyday of minimalism (if there can indeed be a “heyday of minimalism”), the legacy of Klein’s unfettered aesthetic lives on in this season’s sharply tailored jackets, trousers, pencil skirts, and fitted shifts, as well as its structured bags and sleekly elegant shoes.

Unlike the more rigid styles of yore, the contemporary interpretation of minimalism, though still highly constructed in some cases, is decidedly more relaxed and feminine. While it remains defined by its characteristic elegant simplicity, its boundaries have expanded to include unstructured, draped styles in jersey and silk.

The brilliance of this pared-down approach to design is not only that it showcases the lines of the particular piece, but also the personality of the individual wearing it.

WRAP it up shopbop SHOPTALK Think Big: Oversized Bags

An iconic style from an original icon, Diane von Furstenberg’s wrap dress was born in 1974 and has been coveted by fashionable females ever since. When the designer took a step away from fashion in 1985, the wrap did too, only to be relaunched in 1997 after DVF saw that young women were scouring vintage shops for the original ‘70s dresses. At once sophisticated and sexy, the DVF wrap dress tops the list of wardrobe essentials.

To blog or not to blog? It may not be an age-old question, but it's one that's been on many minds here at shopbop. Our answer? To blog, obviously. We've jumped on the Web 2.0 bandwagon and we’re writing about our obsession: fashion! Look for style tips, industry news, designer profiles, guest bloggers, and a whole lot more. It's one more way to foster your fashion obsession, so bookmark it today.

Bigger isn’t always better, but this season, the handbag world says it is. Fashionistas are going gaga for oversized bags like Mayle’s Tati Grand Tote. Why? Because they’re cool and laid-back, and they hold anything and everything. And—hint, hint—big, bright bags are going to be huge (no pun intended) this spring, so think about taking the proverbial “two birds, one stone” route, and pick one up in a rainbow shade now.

What to Where Upper Eastside with Downtown Attitude

Q: I’m obsessed with Gossip Girl, and I especially love the fashion on the show. How can I get the look?

—Emily

At the shopbop offices, we’ve got a major crush on the brilliantly chic and, at times, a little snarky show, too. To get the look just right, you need a balance between S’s Downtown cool and B’s Upper Eastside chic. I recommend starting with a flirty skirt—when ADAM’s plaid mini hit our studio, I instantly thought of GG. Pair it with an oversized cardigan from Joie,

and a high-fashion handbag from Mulberry, and you've got that prep-school flair. Give the look an edge with ankle booties and a sexy sequined top hidden under the cardi, and then add some Brooklyn flavor à la Little J with an extra-long scarf. Some major drama and a few handsome fellas will complete the theme, but I’ll leave that for you to find.

xoxo,
